When I interned in an inpatient psychiatric facility for my music therapy internship, the patients provided me with the nickname "Songbird". When a new patient was admitted onto our unit, veteran patients would introduce me during group as their Songbird. "We call her that because once you hear her sing, you can't help but feel something inside of you. She's our most valued possession on the unit". I don't think it was me they were talking about, rather it was the hour or two during the day where there was a common understanding of what it means to feel human. Where during that time, there was an understanding that all of us had walked through some aspect of life that threw the ground from beneath our feet, reminding us of how small we are in this vast world.
Throughout the years of my life, I've noticed that music often evokes the ineffable within us. Whether its a song that brings you back to a sacred moment, or music that opens the well of emotions that have been buried for years, music has the ability to color the world around us. One of the beautiful things about music therapy is it can be used alongside other health care professions to enhance treatments that are vital for well being.
Explaining music therapy can be difficult at times because there are so many examples to use! For individuals with special needs, music therapy can work on goals such as fine & gross motor skills, language development, expression, social skills, emotional processing, family support, and more. For individuals who are living with mental health, music therapy can help teach coping skills, emotional health, impulse control, reality orientation, and more. music therapy is a therapeutic profession that serves individuals from all walks of life.
